Tour 1

Like most of the significant buildings in Le Havre, the current city hall was built just a few meters from the site of the previous, pre-war building. It was inaugurated in 1958 and signaled a renaissance: Le Havre was now a modern, triumphant city. Its new appeal was embodied in the monumental status of the city hall building, its emphasis on straight lines and right angles.

There was Auguste Perret’s 72-metre high tower, a perfect parallelepiped featuring narrow windows that further accentuate its solemn austerity. Then the wide walkway, an unrivalled, modern-day ‘sovereign shelter’ underscored by a monumental colonnade that stretches some 92 meters. Finally, the building’s functions are clearly distinguished: on the upper stories, the municipal departments and offices; in the horizontal building, which looks out on to the city, there is more sheen, more life, more culture: this is where the great lounges are found, with the city hall theatre at the eastern end.

When Auguste Perret died in 1954, his partner Jacques Tournant completed work on the tower. In 1987, architect Pierre Colboc designed an extension for the city hall, including the transfer of the main entrance to the northern side.
