Royal de Luxe
street theater company
Royal de Luxe is a theatre company, established some 37 years ago, exploring artistic fields such as creating fictional scenarios and putting on street shows, showcase performances, artistic residencies and offbeat parades. Their assorted theatrical formats are unique in the emotions that they elicit among their audiences.
From the company’s busking débuts in Aix-en-Provence to the international renown they enjoy today, Royal de Luxe has stayed true to one vocation: inventing a form of free, popular theatre.
Jean-Luc Courcoult, the troupe’s author, founder and director, always questioning the theatrical traditions, comes up with some wonderfully enchanting projects, such as La Saga des Géants, street performances, the larger-than-life heroes of which have been delighting the public since 1993, hijacking everyday objects to transform them into the heroes of an exquisite and extraordinary world.
Royal de Luxe are now based in Nantes, on invitation of the city’s council, and are seen as a flagship for street theatre and an emblem for France’s cultural influence in the world. Everywhere they go, the unique troupe arouses extraordinary enthusiasm and knock-on effects in the media and for the economy. In recognition of this, Jean-Luc Courcoult was made a knight of France’s Legion of Honor in 2013.
