Le Tetris
from 23 June  to 03 September

Tour 3

The history of art is intimately linked to technological progress. As early as the 19th century, Ada Lovelace imagined machines capable of poetic creation. Jean Tinguely created his own series of ‘artist’ machines in the 1950s. Today, algorithms are everywhere and tools for creation have integrated forms of artificial intelligence.

Some head-spinning questions are thus being asked: can artistic production be ‘programed’ to respond to predictable criteria on the market? Are machines also capable of creativity or even sensitivity, as Philip K. Dick’s science fiction suggests? Will machines even replace artists one day?

The Smart Factory exhibition curated/thought up by Charles Carcopino, tackles these questions via installations illustrating the creative process but concealing the artists’ presence. Spectators are given the role of muse, their presence influencing the art being created.
